Genetics Primer for Breeders I

2019 CKC Seminar | Dr. Kari Ekenstedt, B.Sc., DVM, PhD // Genetics Primer for Breeders - Part 1

Day 1: Session 1 of the 2019 CKC Seminar was presented by Dr. Kari Ekenstedt, B.Sc., DVM, PhD: Genetics Primer for Breeders - Part 1. Dr. Ekenstedt will began the 2019 CKC Seminar with a genetics primer for breeders, creating a basic knowledge base for all attendees, regardless of their existing familiarity with genetics. In this video she defines genetics terminology, explains modes of inheritance, clarifies the difference between simply and complexly-inherited conditions, and more.

Genetics Primer for Breeders II

2019 CKC Seminar | Dr. Kari Ekenstedt, B.Sc., DVM, PhD // Genetics Primer for Breeders - Part 2

Day 1: Session 2 of the 2019 CKC Seminar was presented by Dr. Kari Ekenstedt, B.Sc., DVM, PhD: Genetics Primer for Breeders - Part 2. Continuing her presentation from Part 1, Dr. Ekenstedt presented on the basics of genetics. This session provided case examples of various modes of inheritance and explained the different types of genetic tests. Dr. Ekenstedt covers how parentage testing works and how it is different from testing for a disease of coat colour gene, the type of “modern” genetic data that is being used in both genetic testing and research (e.g., whole-genome sequencing) and more.

Practicalities of Genetic Testing

2019 CKC Seminar | Dr. Kari Ekenstedt, B.Sc., DVM, PhD // Practicalities of Genetic Testing

Day 1: Session 3 of the 2019 CKC Seminar was presented by Dr. Kari Ekenstedt, B.Sc., DVM, PhD: Practicalities of Genetic Testing. What resources are there for my breed? Which tests are required (or available) for my breed? What sample type do I need? Which testing laboratory should I use? Dr. Ekenstedt’s presentation on the “Practicalities of Genetic Testing” will answer all of these questions about genetic tests, and more including tips on how to get good samples when performing genetic tests.

Those Panel Tests!

2019 CKC Seminar | Dr. Kari Ekenstedt, B.Sc., DVM, PhD // Those Panel Tests!

Day 1: Session 4 of the 2019 CKC Seminar was presented by Dr. Kari Ekenstedt, B.Sc., DVM, PhD: Thos Panel Tests! Dog genetic panel tests are all the rage – Dr. Ekenstedt discusses which ones are out there, how they work, and how they can be used (or misused) in your breeding program. She discusses the main parts of panel tests: 1) breed testing, 2) diversity tools, and 3) disease/trait panel tests, and compares and contrasts what these panels can and cannot tell you, and how to dissect the results.

The International Partnership for Dogs’ Harmonization of Genetic Testing for Dogs

2019 CKC Seminar | Dr. Brenda Bonnett, IPFD // IPFD Harmonization for Genetic Testing

Day 2: Session 1 of the 2019 CKC Seminar was presented by Dr. Brenda Bonnett, B.Sc., DVM, PhD: IPFD Harmonization for Genetic Testing Dr. Brenda Bonnett from the International Partnership for Dogs (IPFD) highlights the multiple ways in which the Harmonization of Genetic Testing (HGTD) and the International Partnership for Dogs (IPFG) Expert Panel initiatives are supporting robust, good quality genetic testing and providing the basis for enhanced genetic counseling. CKC and its members are facing challenges of the rapidly changing landscape of genetic testing, Dr. Bonnett discusses how these issues are being dealt with in other countries.

Modern Genetics and the Utility of the COI

2019 CKC Seminar | Dr. Kari Ekenstedt, B.Sc., DVM, PhD // Modern Genetics and the Utility of the COI

Day 2: Session 2 of the 2019 CKC Seminar was presented by Dr. Kari Ekenstedt, B.Sc., DVM, PhD: Modern Genetics and the Utility of the COI COI is the “Coefficient of Inbreeding,” a metric that has, until recent years, been calculated from pedigree data. This information can now also be very effectively obtained via genome-wide information being generated from dogs’ DNA in research laboratories. Dr. Ekenstedt discusses the pros and cons of pedigree-based COIs, as will some of the new haplotype-sharing breed “wheels”, which demonstrate (sometimes unexpected) relationships between breeds.

Population Level Health and Diversity

2019 CKC Seminar | Dr. Brenda Bonnett, IPFD // Population Level Health and Diversity

Day 2: Session 3 of the 2019 CKC Seminar was presented by Dr. Brenda Bonnett, B.Sc., DVM, PhD: Population Level Health and Diversity While you must always consider the individual health of each dog in your breeding program, you cannot neglect the population (breed-wide) health of your breed. Dr. Bonnett of the International Partnership for Dogs explains why genetic testing is not a magic silver bullet, and how to incorporate it as part of your larger breeding program screening. Data on common/major disease issues is shared, along with discussion of the perils of “decision-making by Facebook”, highlighting additional tools soon to be available from IPFD and DogWellNet.com.”
